Here is a review of the new Griffin helicopter kit from Italeri. The 1/72 scale kit is for the CH-146 (as designated by DND)
Bell 412 and as such includes two other Bell 412 marking schemes. As well, the kit is set up so that the same basic molds
could be used to make a future kit of the 212 Twin Huey. This kit has in fact already appeared from Revell Germany who
seems to have a good working relationship with Italeri.
As to the kit itself, I have found some problems, but nothing that can't be corrected fairly easily. The interior pictures
that I have of the Canadian Machines numbered 414 and 415 do not have the canvasback bench seat. I filled in the holes in
the floor. The machines however had a pair of nice "airline" style seats in the back. These are the same style as those in
the front. If I find some suitable seats I may add them later, but since they are removable leaving them out is fine. The
Griffin does have the canvas side seats (parts 11&12) so put these in. Finally, they tell you to paint the back bulkhead
and interior roof a pale green, but pictures show them the same color as the floor so use the grey overall. The interior is
a good basic set up and is fine out of the box but one could add some detail using reference pictures.
With the exterior, all is fairly good, but there is a fit problems with the top fairing going into assembly F. I had to put
some this strip shims to fill gaps on each side. As to other concerns, in step 6 the blank panel (part 53) on the starboard
tail boom instead of the part with the door. While I can't speak for machine 401, both 414&415 have the door but without
the vent molded in the middle. I'm going to renumber my kit as one of the 2 mentioned machines and used the door insert. You
also have the choice as to the flare / chafe dispensers. Pictures show clearly removable panels but no dispensers. Take
your pick. Lastly, in step 9 they cover the front port door window with part 88. I know that at least 212 had such a cover,
so maybe individual Griffins may being fitted as well. Check references.
The rest of the assembly is fine by the instructions but the kit is missing the long rail antenna under the tail boom. The
actual antenna is greatly different from the kit part. Check references and scratch build this one. Also the Griffins do
not have parts 81 and 82 so leave these off. Use pictures to mount the hoist in the right spot as the instructions are not
clear. I have not seen any Canadian birds with the rockets as shown on the box. They all have mountings for a search light
and FLIR. These are fitted on the SAR machines.
Finally as to the color scheme, a big disappointment as the paint scheme appears to be fictional as to the pattern and the
wrong colors are given. The decals are fine as the markings are in black. The camo should be two tone green using FS 34084
and 34095. I have not actually looked for these colors in particular paint lines. The Dutch SAR scheme is colorful and an
Italian Army one in green grey camo with a silver underside. The instructions set out different options for these such as
radomes and the antennas so follow the instructions. I have not researched these for accuracy but no doubt modelers in
Holland and Italy will have their own comments. All in all a good basic kit out of the box, which can be improved even more
with a little research and scratch building.
