1924 to 1939


World War II

Avro Anson Mk.V (1/72nd scale)
Built by: Barry Friesen, Altona, MB, Canada
Airfix's ancient Mk.I Anson was extensively modified into a Canadian Mk.V by vacuforming a new upper fuselage, canopy, nose glass, navigator's dome and engine cowlings, into which resin copies of 9-cylinder engines were inserted. The landing gear was improved with wheels from the spares box and extra items. Overall, the fabric texture was removed, since the Mk.V was covered in plywood, the fin and rudder reshaped, and the ailerons shortened. Paints were Gunze acrylics and the decals were from the spares box.

Supermarine Spifire Mk.Vc 'Tropical' (1/48th scale)
Built by: Trevor McTavish, Airdrie, AB, Canada
Tamiya's kit was built out of the box and painted with a combination of Model Master enamels and Polly Scale acrylics. Decals for a North Africa based 417 Squadron machine are from the kit. Grey paint added to the flat coat faded the colours and chalk pastels were used for exhaust and gunpowered stains.

1945 to 1967

Avro CF-105 Arrow Mk. 1 (1/48th scale)
Built by: Emil Varosi, Guelph, ON, Canada
Hobbycraft's original Arrow kit was built out of the box and mounted on a stand (formerly a banana hanger). Markings are from a modified Arrow Graphics sheet, depicting the first Arrow to fly.

Avro CF-105 Arrow Mk. I (1/72nd scale)
Built by: Justin Davenport, South Jordan, UT, USA
Hobbycraft's smaller Arrow was built out of the box and displayed on a base made of glue gun sticks and wood. A sewing needle was used for the long pitot tube. The paints used were Tamiya, Model Master Acryl and Gunze. SNJ powder and Polly Scale were used for the metallic parts and touch ups were done using a silver Sharpie marker. Decals were a combination of kit and Arrow Graphics sets. The high gloss was accomplished by using Future floorwax.

Avro CF-105 Arrow Mk. 1 (1/72nd scale)
Built by: Steve Eggers, Amarillo, TX, USA
Hobbycraft's Avro Arrow was built out of the box and painted with Model Master and Testors enamels. The decals are a combination of the markings supplied with the kit and markings from the spares box.

Fairchild C-119 Boxcar (1/72nd scale)
Built by: Flinder Lo, Calgary, AB, Canada
Italeri's kit was built out of the box, although Leading Edge's resin radome nose was added. The model was painted with Gunze spray paints and finished with Leading Edge's decals.

Canadair CT-114 Tutor (1/72nd scale)
Built by: Justin Davenport, South Jordan, UT, USA
Hobbycraft's Tutor kit was detailed with scratchbuilt details in the cockpit, the aft smoke generator and antenna. Painted with Model Master Italian Red and finished with Arrow Graphics's Red Knight Decals.

Canadair CT-114 Tutor (1/72nd scale)
Built by: Justin Davenport, South Jordan, UT, USA
Hobbycraft's Tutor kit was built out of the box with the exception of several small details to the cockpit, inlcuding ejection handles and tape seatbelts. The model was painted with a combination of Alclad, Model Master, Polly Scale and Tamiya acrylics. Decals for the 1967 Golden Centennaires demonstration team came from Arrow Graphics.

Unification and Beyond

McDonnell CF-101B Voodoo (1/48th scale)
Built by: Charlie 'Cheetah' Arsenault, Moncton, NB, Canada
Monogram's F-101B was converted into a CF-101B from the second batch of Voodoos by removing the American formation light panels, dorsal blade antenna and USAF specific vents. Paints were a selection of Model Master, Testors and Humbrol enamels while the decals for 416 'Lynx' Squadron came from a Leading Edge set.

McDonnell CF-101B Voodoo (1/72nd scale)
Built by: Sergey Nefyodo, Calgary, AB, Canada
Revell's F-101B was converted into a CF-101B. Decals came from Leading Edge.

Canadair CF-104 Starfighter (1/48th scale)
Built by: Colin Kunkel, Saskatoon, SK, Canada
Hasegawa's F-104J was build almost out of the box, except for resin RWRs that were included in a Leading Edge decal set. Painted in the colours of the 1983 Tiger Meet aircraft from 439 'Sabre Tooth Tiger' Squadron, it wears decals from Belcher Bits.

Canadair CF-116A Freedom Fighter (1/72nd scale)
Built by: Scott McTavish, Calgary, AB, Canada
Built out of the box, this Italeri kit uses the camera equipped recon nose, Model Master enamels and Mike Grant decals.

Canadair CT-133 Silver Star (1/48th scale)
Built by: Colin Kunkel, Saskatoon, SK, Canada
Hobbycraft's T-33 was bulit out of the box, with the landing gear and flaps raised and two pilot figures installed. This aircraft wears the colours of one serving with 414 Squadron, following its return to Canada from the 1 CAG in Germany. Gunze's acrylic paints were used, as were Leading Edge's CF-104 decals.

McDonnell Douglas CF-188A Hornet (1/48th scale)
Built by: Lyle 'Tilt' Katchur, Red Deer, AB, Canada
Hasegawa's kit was built out of the box (and for the first time, gear down), posed as an aircraft would be while on alerti. The pilot it was built for spent many hours sitting this way. The Hasegawa weapons set supplied the armament and the paints are from Model Master and Humbrol's enamel lines. The markings came from the generic CAF Hornet set by Leading Edge.

McDonnell Douglas CF-188A Hornet (1/48th scale)
Built by: Dave Steele, Libby, MN, USA
Another Hasegawa Hornet kit, built straight out of the box. Model Master enamels were used to paint the model and a red Sharpie marker was used to outline the edges of the gear doors. Leading Edge's decals were used for 439 Squadron's Tiger Meet markings.

Royal Canadian Navy

Sikorsky HO4S ‘Horse’ (1/72nd scale)
Built by: Trevor McTavish, Airdrie, AB, Canada
Italeri’s H-19/S-55 kit converted to an RCN ‘Horse’ by removing the longitudinal stiffener along the tail boom. Paints are from the Polly Scale acrylic line and decals were from Belcher Bits. This kit took years to finish because it was always breaking.

mcDonnell F2H-3 Banchee (1/72nd scale)
Built by: Scott McTavish, Calgary, AB, Canada
Quickly built using Hobbycraft's kit, this Banchee was painted with Model Master enamels and finished with kit decals.

Sikorsky CH-124 Sea King (1/48th scale)
Built by: Scott McTavish, Calgary, AB, Canada
With the exception of adding Cutting Edge short sponsons, this Hasegawa kit was built out of the box and painted with Model Master enamels, this Sea King is definately eye-catching with its RCN greys and bright dayglo panels and numbers. Belcher Bits decals were used.
